Big Island Hawaii Hotel Guide
Looking for a Big Island Hawaii Accommodations? Check out my Big Island Hawaii Hotel Guide.
A quick word about Big Island Hawaii lodging...You are going to find the majority of the resorts, condo rentals, and bed & breakfasts are located on the Kona, or sunny leeward, side of the island. How sunny is it? Kona usually gets less than 10 inches of rain a year...it's usually closer to 5-6 inches.
Hilo, on the windward side, gets much more rain...in the range of 180 inches a year...making it the wettest city in the U.S. People don't usually like to stay where it rains alot so Big Island accommodations in Hilo are much more limited than in Kona.
However, all that rainfal makes Hilo extremely lush...it is a plant or flower lovers haven. In fact, Hilo is the orchid capitol of the world. Hilo is also much closer to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park than Kona...Kona is a good 2 hour drive from the the park whereas Hilo is a little less than an hour away.
Suggestion: If you would like to explore Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in depth, I suggest you stay a night or two in Hilo or in the park itself.
I have categorized the following Big Island Hawaii hotels by location and the following price tiers:
- $ - $100 and up
- $$ - $200 and up
- $$$ - $300 and up
- $$$$ - $400 and up
- $$$$$ - $500 and up
Rates vary tremendously based on a property's proximity to the ocean and the rooms' view. Properties closer to the ocean tend to cost more. Likewise, Garden or mountain view rooms are going to be much cheaper than ocean view rooms. There is also a difference between partial and full ocean views.
The price tier that I list for each property represents the rack rates for the cheapest room category at the property. Remember,...People rarely pay the rack rates...For the best rates, call a knowledgable Hawaii Travel Agent...me!
Sidebar--Many resorts are charging what is called a "resort fee". It usually runs anywhere from $10-$25/day. It includes such things as internet access, phone calls, gym use, parking, etc. You can't decline this fee, so just be aware of it.
Big Island Hawaii Hotels -- Kohala Coast
The Kohala Coast is about 20 miles north of the Kona airport...a 25 minute drive away. It is home to the most luxurious Big Island Resorts. The abundance of sunshine and crystal clear water make this area a vacationer's paradise.

Big Island Hawaii Hotels -- Kona
The area known as Kona can be somewhat confusing...Some people refer to it as Kona...others call it Kailua-Kona...and some people even refer to the whole western side of the Big Island as Kona or Kona side.
The town of Kona (or Kailua-Kona) is the area south of the Kona airport, and that is the area that the following properites fall under. The accommodations are cheaper than on the Kohala Coast...and although there is abundant sunshine, there is a lack of swimmable beaches...thus the cheaper prices.
Big Island Hawaii Hotels -- Hilo
Hilo is a stark contrast to sunny Kona...it gets around 70 inches of rain a year making it the rainiest city in the United States. However, it does have a laid-back small town charm that I love...and it is a great place to stay to explore Hawaii Volcanoes National Park which is 45 minutes away.
Don't try and get a room here the week after Easter (mid-April). The Merri Monarch Hula Festival is held here and everything is sold out.
Choices of Big Island Hawaii Accommodations are very limited in Hilo...very limited...here they are...
Big Island Hawaii Hotels -- Volcano
There is only one hotel in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
