Oahu Golf Courses
Oahu Golf Courses are some of the best around...Who wouldn't want to be teeing off next to the beautiful Pacific Ocean in 80 degree weather?...Especially if the greens at home are under 2 feet of snow.
Oahu has some great golf courses that are ranked highly by such publications as Golf Magazine and Golf Digest. Oahu golfing enthusiasts can try their hand at Koolau Golf Course, named "toughest in the nation" or play the busiest public course in the nation...and everything else in between.
Sidebar--Oahu golf courses have several different rates. There are:
- Hawaii resident (kamaaina) rates
- Non-resident rates which are further designated by U.S. and non-U.S. citizen rates.
Resident rates are about 50%-70% less than non-resident rates...and non-U.S. citizens will pay more than U.S. residents.
Why?...Mainly because of the large number of visitors from Japan. Golfing in Japan is very expensive (over $400)...so paying $175 in Hawaii seems like a bargain.
Maybe someday this will change, but it's always been like that for as long as I can remember.
TIP--If you are planning on golfing a few times in Hawaii, I recommend looking into the Golf Hawaii Card. Not every course on Oahu participates in the program so be sure to check out the details first.
It is a great deal...the cost of the card is usually recovered after the first round of golf. In fact, it was named by GOLF Magazine as one of the five best golf value cards in the nation! Their website is www.HawaiiGolfDeals.com
Ko Olina Golf Club
This Oahu golf course is located on the leeward (west) coast in the Ko Olina Resort. It has been recognized by Golf Digest as one of the "Top 75 Resort Courses in the U.S.".
Ko Olina Golf Club has hosted the senior PGA and LPGA Hawaiian Ladies Open, as well as the 2006 and 2007 LPGA Fields Open.
Enjoy the convenience of the Prolink GPS system on the carts, and stay for a great meal at Roy's after golfing. This is definitely one of the top courses on Oahu.
Note--Guests staying at the JW Marriott Ihilani Hotel or Marriott’s Beach Club get a discount at the golf course.

Turtle Bay Resort Golf Club
This Oahu golf course lies on the quiet North Shore of Oahu and is ranked as one of Hawaii's best courses by Golf Digest. Turtle Bay Golf Club actually consists of two courses, the Arnold Palmer and the George Fazio.
The Arnold Palmer course hosts the PGA Champion's Tour Turtle Bay Championship and plays like a links course on the front 9 and switches gear to woodlands and forest on the back 9.
Note--Guests staying at the Turtle Bay Resort get a discount at the golf course.
- Designer--Arnold Palmer, Ed Seay, and George Fazio
- Cost--$185 for the Palmer course and $160 for the Fazio course.

Koolau Golf Club
This Hawaii golf course is considered "toughest in the nation." Be prepared to lose some balls! The general rule is whatever your handicap, bring that many balls.
It has been in Golf Magazine's "Top 100 Courses to Play". Golf Digest named it the "#1 Golf Course on Oahu."
It is nestled in the beautiful Koolau mountains on the windward (east) side of the island. This is a course you should play just to say you played it. It's a super nice course, and usually not that busy because nobody plays a course this tough on a regular basis.

Luana Hills Country Club
This is another challenging Oahu golf course. It is similar to Koolau Golf Course, but shorter. It is also located on the windward (east) side of the island.

Makaha Valley Country Club
This Oahu golf course is one of the island's best deals. It is adjacent to the Makaha Resort Golf Club, but much cheaper and still very nice.
It is located on the leeward (west) coast. My wife's parents just loved this course.

For some other cheap options, you may want to check out the municipal golf courses. There are six of them run by the City & County of Honolulu.
Their non-resident green fees are $50 with a cart, or you can walk for $42. They are nice courses, but getting a tee time can be difficult because they are so cheap (residents pay only $20).
Check their website for course information and making tee times.
