Cheap Hawaiian Restaurants | Matsumoto's Grocery Store

This is one of the most well-known and recognized of all Hawaiian restaurants and it is not even a restaurant. M. Matsumoto Grocery Store has been a landmark in Haleiwa on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii ever since I was a little kid.

People call it Matsumoto's shaved ice or most people simple call it Matsumoto's...and that is what they are famous for...shaved ice. Really? Really! It is just one of those things you have to try and a stop you have to make when driving up to the North Shore.

Even though shaved ice probably does not sound that exciting to you, trust me when I say it is ten a hundred times better than the stuff they sell at ballparks, stadiums, carnivals, malls, etc. It won't be the typical syrup on a chunk of solid ice you've had will actually be shaved and fluffy...AND, because you're having it in Hawaii, you can get such exotic flavors as pineapple, lilikoi (passion fruit), and guava...AND, you can get ice cream or azuki beans in the middle. Azuki beans (sweet) may be too weird for some, but everyone loves ice cream in the middle!

Matsumoto's is also a great place to pick up up souvenirs, and any odds & ends you may need. They sell t-shirts, sunscreen, snacks, drinks, etc.

If you tell people you went up to the North Shore of Oahu, they will ask you if you stopped at Matsumoto's so you might as well...and if the line if the line is too long, you can always get your shaved ice next door at Aoki's. When it is 80 degrees and sunny, enjoying a cold Hawaiian shaved ice is something you just have to do!
